元国連調査員のジェリー（ブラッド・ピット）は、妻と二人の娘と共にフィラデルフィアの路上で交通渋滞に巻き込まれているさなか、突如として発生したゾンビによる襲撃に遭う。人々が次々とゾンビに襲われ、あっという間にゾンビが増殖しパニックに陥るなか、なんとか逃げ延びたジェリー達は、国連時代の同僚ティエリー（ファナ・モコエナ）の助けでアメリカ海軍戦艦へと避難することができた。そこで、人々のゾンビ化現象は既に世界中でパンデミック状態になっていることを知らされたジェリーは、ウイルス学者率いるチームと共に原因解明に協力するよう要請される。彼らはまず、今回の現象で"ゾンビ"という言葉が初めて使われたとされる韓国に向かうのだが…。
