コンピュータ制御の高性能ロボットが人間に代わって格闘技を行う近未来。ロボット格闘技のプロモーターをしている元ボクサーのチャーリー（ヒュー・ジャックマン）は、勢いだけで戦略を持たずにいつも負けてばかり、借金まみれの生活をしていた。ある時、赤ん坊の時に別れたきりの11歳の息子マックス（ダコタ・ゴヨ）と数週間を過ごす事になるのだが、母親の死という悲しみを抱えたマックスは父親に反発するばかり。さらには、ロボット廃棄所で見つけた旧式ロボット"ATOM"をマックスは自力で掘り起こし、何とか動かして試合に出そうと言い出す。そんなマックスの熱意が、次第に親子の関係までも変えてゆく…。興奮度抜群のロボット格闘技シーンと、涙無くして観ることのできない親子愛が見どころ。監督は「ナイト ミュージアム」のショーン・レヴィ。
