1970年代アメリカ。郊外で暮らす中流階級の夫婦、ノーマ（キャメロン・ディアス）とアーサー（ジェームズ・マースデン）のもとにある日差出人不明の木箱が届く。やがて謎の男（フランク・ランジェラ）が現われ、「24時間以内に箱のボタンを押せば100万ドルをプレゼントする。ただしどこかで誰かが死ぬことになるだろう」と告げて去って行く。他人の命を左右しかねない決断を迫られた夫婦の人生は、とんでもない方向へと狂い始めてゆく…。
