滅びつつある母星に残した家族を救うため、水を求めて地球に墜落した異星人ニュートン（ディヴィッド・ボウイ）。地球でニュートンは発明による大金を獲得し、恋人もできるが、やがて宇宙人として捕らえられ人体実験にされてしまう・・。
撮影監督出身で「華氏451」や「赤死病の仮面」のニコラス・ローグ監督作品。不気味な雰囲気を醸し出すディヴィッド・ボウイのある種無機質な個性と、色彩の魔術師・ローグ監督の演出が光る異色SFムービー。
