ニューヨークのセントラルパークに突如現われた、宇宙からの謎の物体。専門家を集めた対策チームが組織され、生物学者ヘレン（ジェニファー・コネリー）も招集される。物体から現われた使者クラトゥ（キアヌ・リーヴス）に興味を抱いたヘレンは彼の言葉を聞こうと試みるが、クラトゥは施設から忽然と姿を消してしまうのだった…。
本格SF映画の先駆的作品「地球の静止する日」を、「エミリー・ローズ」のスコット・デリクソン監督がキアヌ・リーヴス主演でリメイクした大作。オリジナルよりもシリアスなタッチで、環境破壊への警告を盛り込んだ現代ならではの作品背景と、最新CG技術を駆使した映像が見どころ。
