「らき☆すた」米国盤DVDは、5月6日にVol.1、7月1日にVol.2がそれぞれボックス付限定盤とディスクのみの通常盤（各4話収録）でリリースされた。今回はVol.1限定盤についてのレビュー。楽しい付属特典や英語吹替えの収録、お手頃価格と、米国盤ならではのDVDに日本のファンも大満足間違いなしだ。
これだけ社会現象になった「らき☆すた」の面白さは、日本のユーザーにはいまさら紹介するまでもない。しかし、おそらく多くの日本に住む「らき☆すた」ファンにとって、この「らき☆すた」はアメリカでも本当にウケるのだろうか？という疑問がもたげるのではないか。確かにアメリカでも同メーカーから出た「涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱」に続く人気DVDとなっているが、これほど過去の日本のアニメ、マンガ、TV、ゲームなどの引用やパロディ満載の本作をアメリカ人も面白い思うのか。いやそもそも、話の内容を理解できるのか、と思わざるにはいられないだろう。
そこで今回は「らき☆すた」の大ファンでもあるDVD Fantasium のアメリカ人スタッフに、作品見どころをレビューをしてもらった。（原文に続き和訳を掲載）
When I first began watching Lucky Star, I'll admit I had a hard time getting into it because many of the outside references were over my head. I knew what a Chocolate Cornet was, but I couldn't stop myself from looking for a true "meaning" of the show, its main purpose for existing. Luckily for me, this urge soon faded as I began to realize that Lucky Star is meant to poke fun at the everyday, and to remind the viewer that our realities are never as boring as they really seem, but are full of comical and emotional moments that we remember and recount over and over again as our life goes on.
This is represented well between scenes of conversational topics and the reality of these girls' lives. For example, when Konata is discussing the many types of "moe" Miyuki has, the next scene immediately following shows an example of Miyuki coincidentally expressing these traits.
Having watched a fair amount of anime over time, coming across Lucky Star was a breath of fresh air. I think this is mostly attributed to its contemporary and realistic portrayal of a group of high school girls living in Saitama in the 2000s. For all the realistic details it affords, the viewer always knows we are still in an idyllic anime world. As a non-Japanese person watching Lucky Star, I became obsessed with the constant references to otaku culture of the real world. Lucky Star is an excellent example of a "meta-anime": an anime dedicated to and constantly referencing the world of anime itself.
I would go on to say that without the internet there would probably be very little interest in Lucky Star in America. Being able to jump right onto Youtube and enjoy the same commercials from the 1970's that Konata references (Timoteiiii~) changes Lucky Star from an exclusively Japanese-relevant show into a comedic anime that can be enjoyed anywhere regardless of location.
From the viewpoint of a female viewer, I really enjoyed Lucky Star because the show is solely dedicated to its female characters. As for Konata Izumi, our high school student with a penchant for all the games and anime she can fit into her day, she is everything we never get to see in the main character of a series - outrightly otaku, but still female. This is departing from, for example, the series Genshiken, which reveals both the positives and negatives of the stereotypical types of otaku lifestyles, making for a more somber and pathetic image of otaku in general.
In addition, one of the most interesting aspects for me is the inclusion of Patricia Martin in future episodes, the American exchange student who works with Konata at the cosplay cafe. Her character is a reminder to the rest of the world viewers that Japan and the anime industry is aware of the huge popularity of anime overseas. She also represents the growing curiosity of non-Japanese to travel to and live in Japan to learn more about its culture and history, and to spread the knowledge wherever they go.
There are a couple of interesting points about the way that Lucky Star is translated from the original Japanese: it retains much more of the original Japanese terms and honorifics than any other anime I had seen before. The Volume 1 liner notes begin by giving a short explanation of the uses of "-san, -chan" and the rest of the honorific name suffixes used in the show because for the most part, all of these are included in the English dialogue. Nicknames are also still retained, and many types of cuisine and phrases used in jokes are well-documented in the liner notes of each volume so that the English viewer might still get the gist of the original Japanese jokes.
For example, in Episode 3 where Konata and the twins are discussing the subtleties between fraternal and identical twins, the original line that ends the conversation where Konata says that "all this talk of eggs and sausage is getting me hungry" is retained in the English, even though only the liner notes go on to explain the original Japanese word phrases as ending sounding much like the English word sausage when pronounced in Japanese. These are examples of where the liner notes become necessary to the average American viewer who has a less-than-fluent understanding of Japanese. I really enjoyed this style of translation because as a purist, I generally enjoy anime more when the original Japanese is retained throughout the English translations and notes help to further that end.
Finally, The English dub for Lucky Star is overall very enjoyable, and the voice actresses do a fine job of following the tone of the original Japanese. Highlights include Bandai's decision to bring back Wendee Lee, the English voice of Haruhi Suzumiya, as the voice of Konata. For those familiar with Aya Hirano's work on both of the original Japanese tracks this is a good way to reference that connection. Kari Wahlgren as the voice of Kagami is especially hilarious in English, and she recreates her moments of frustration very well.
最初に「らき☆すた」を見たときは、外からの引用があまりに多すぎてさっぱり分からなかったというのが正直なところです。チョココロネのことは知っていましたが、この作品の本当に意図することは他にあるはずだと考えずにはいられませんでした。そのうちに気がついたのは、「らき☆すた」はなにげない日常生活をオモシロ可笑しく見ているということです。そして自分たちの現実世界はそれほど退屈ではないし、コミカルで感情的な瞬間で満ちていて、日々を過ごす中で後から繰り返し思い出したりするものだということ。それは女の子たちが話しているシーンと、現実の出来事のシーンとの狭間によく表れています。例えば、"こなた"が"みゆきさん"の「萌え」要素をいろいろ話し、その直後のシーンで"みゆきさん"が偶然にもそれを証明するような行動をしてしまうところです。
「らき☆すた」はこれまでに観てきたアニメのなかでもとても斬新でした。現代の埼玉県在住の女子高生たちをリアルに描写していることが大きいと思いますが、リアル社会のディテールが描かれていながらも、観る方はこれがほのぼのとしたコミック・アニメの世界だということも分かっています。「らき☆すた」に出てくる現実のオタク文化の引用は日本人でなくともハマってしまうものがあり、これはアニメの世界を題材にしたアニメ、「メタアニメ」の好例ともいえるでしょう。
そもそもインターネットが無ければ、アメリカ人が本作に興味を持つことはあまり無かったと思います。"こなた"が70年代のTVコマーシャル「ティモテ〜」をマネをしているのを観て、早速、Youtubeで元ネタをチェックすることが可能だからこそ、「らき☆すた」はもはや日本限定でなく場所を問わずに楽しめるコミック・アニメになるのです。
女性ファンの視点としては、もっぱら女性キャラに重点が置かれているというのも面白いところです。ゲームやアニメへの強烈な嗜好が日常を占める"泉こなた"に関しては、オタクなことを隠さず、それも女の子と、アニメの主人公としては珍しい存在。オタクの典型的な生活とその長所・短所を描いた「げんしけん」シリーズにあるような、ネクラなオタクという一般的なイメージを払拭してくれています。
またもっと興味深いのは、今後のエピソードに登場する、アメリカ人の交換留学生であり"こなた"と一緒にコスプレ喫茶で働く"パトリシア・マーティン"の存在です。彼女のキャラクターは、世界でアニメがものすごい人気だということを日本人もアニメ業界もちゃんと分かっているよ、と世界中の視聴者にアピールしています。"パトリシア"は非日本人が持つ日本に対する好奇心そのものです。日本に旅行に行ったり住んだりして文化と歴史を学ぶ「外人」は、行く先々でもその知識を広めてみたりするのです。
オリジナル日本語の英語翻訳に関しても、いくつか面白い点が挙げられます。これまで観てきたアニメと違って、もともとの日本語の言葉や敬語をそのまま使っているところが多く見られます。Vol.1のライナーノートは作中に出てくる「〜さん」「〜ちゃん」など、名前に付く敬語の使い方の短い説明から始まりますが、実は英語音声でも「〜san」「〜chan」がそのまま使われています。ニックネームもそのままです。食べ物やジョークのフレーズなどはライナーノートにしっかり書いてあるので、英語が母国語の視聴者も日本語のジョークの主旨が分かるしくみです。
例えば、第3話で"こなた"と柊姉妹が一卵性と二卵性双生児の細かい違いについて話しているところでは、英語字幕・音声はオリジナルのセリフと同じ「卵とかソーセージとか話してたらお腹空いたね」と言う"こなた"の言葉がそのまま翻訳されています ("all this talk of eggs and sausage is getting me hungry")。日本語の「双生児」が英語の「Sausage」の発音に似ているということは、ライナーノートを読むと初めて分かります。こんなところで、日本語が分からない普通のアメリカ人にはこのライナーノートが不可欠ですし、またできるだけオリジナルに近い形で楽しみたいアニメ純粋主義者としても、オリジナルに忠実な翻訳があって、さらにライナーノートでの詳しい解説が理解を助けてくれるのは嬉しいものです。
最後に、「らき☆すた」の英語吹替えはとても楽しめました。声優陣の演技はオリジナル日本語の口調に忠実でなかなかいいと思います。Bandai社が"涼宮ハルヒ"役と同じウェンディー・リーを"こなた"に起用したのは特筆すべきところ。日本語では平野綾がどちらも演じているのに馴染んでいるだけあってうれしい繋がりです。"かがみ"役のカリ・ワルグレンも、フラストレーションいっぱいの感じをうまく再現しています。
